5Excellent introduction to pandas for preschoolers-lower elementaryAug 15, 2009
By Z Hayes
I got this book whilst at the Smithsonian Zoo in Washington, D.C. My 4.5 year-old daughter loves pandas and this book seemed just right for her. The story revolves around a young panda cub who was born in the Atlanta Zoo in late 2006, named Mei Lan. Young children and readers alike will learn about how tiny young pandas are when they are born, and how they eventually grow their fur and black & white markings that make them so distinctive. The story also focuses on how Mei Lan grows under her mother's watchful eyes, and learns to eat bamboo shoots and leaves etc. The text is easy to read and the illustrations are in full-color and visually pleasing. I liked that the focus was not just on Mei Lan, but also in contrasting the pandas with other bears such as grizzlies and the red panda, amongst others. This is perfect for adults to read aloud to young children, and also for readers who are able to read with some help.
