4Great for just before the test.Nov 08, 2005

CCIE Routing and Switching Flash Cards

Reviewer: Glenn Bradley, Senior Network Engineer

Reviewer Certification: CCDA, CCNA, CCNP, ISSP

Rating: 4 out of 5

This text and flash card format is a great "last 30 days before the test" tool. If you've been preparing for your written or have plans to, remember this book. I chose a method that may work for some and not for others.

I took the four exam method to achieve my CCNP. I did this because it was more important to me to have an in depth understanding of the four primary disciplines than it was to get through the process quickly. I didn't want any gaps in my knowledge base as I prepared for the CCIE written.

I came straight off the CCNP completion and went into a 90 day high intensity self study program that basically occupied all my free time. I passed with (a little) room to spare but would have loved to have this book for my last 30 days of prep time.

Be sure to understand that this book is a study aid. It will in no way prepare you for the exam in and of itself. However, used in conjunction with a solid, well rounded study plan, it will increase your chances of success substantially.

The limited text preceding each chapter and the more in depth discussions of specific technologies that follow each chapter are well written and right to the point. I did not feel that I was reading a lot of fluff that some authors use to make it appear that there is greater value in the material being presented.

I give the book 4 out of 5. As mentioned earlier; the audience would include those just completing their CCNP and planning to go directly for the CCIE written in order to hang onto the more elusive details that we all learn just before an exam. Some folks may be planning to take the written directly as they are already functioning at the CCNP level. This text will help fill in the blanks they may have by not having the benefit of preparing for and taking the CCNP tests.

3A small start...Aug 16, 2005
By B. Bauer
This book barely scratches the surface of the preparation required for the CCIE R&S written. The test has a considerable amount of minutia, some of which isn't even covered in the Cisco documentation. There are a number of topics on the test that not only aren't discussed in depth in this book, but actually aren't discussed at all. And of course it will in no way prepare you for the questions where you know the answer, but its not on the list (Cisco is notorious for that).

But its a start...and the test engine is an easy way to memorize the minutia that it does cover. Just don't expect that this book hints on all the topics that will be on the test.

3Good book, but poor serviceJul 13, 2005
By Cornelius Hornswaggle "Zarathustra"
I purchased this book about a month ago and have found the material to be well suited to the purpose of reviewing the material in a condensed fashion. One bit of warning, however. I purchased this book mainly because of the advertised flashcard software for Pocket PC. Because I travel so much, I thought studying CCIE material would be a productive use of my down time. I was very chagrined to learn that the software doesn't install successfully on my Pocket PC. The CD touts support from Cisco Press and urges you to register with them but as far as I can see this is more for marketing purposes than as an opportunity to support the user. I even took the trouble of browsing the errata at the Cisco Press website and emailing the address they listed for book support but didn't receive a response from them. The material is good, but I have been sorely disappointed about not receiving what I was promised. For the price of this book, they really should deliver.

4Great for CCIE Written prepMay 06, 2005
By Brion Washington
Let me first start by saying I was bummed to learn that my CCIE written had expired. Needless to say I had to retake the written. I picked up this exam pack in order to help me do quick refresher on topics that I had become dormant in. The Authors Anthony Sequeira and Kevin Wallace exam pack was just what I needed.

You are presented three ways of reviewing the material. These include 500+ flash cards, a pdf book and a test engine with 650 questions.

The flash cards were pretty good, and I normally hate them ( except when I was in 6th grade). The cards help as another way of reviewing the material in order to cement the knowledge you are reviewing. The flashcards are very in-depth cards that do help with your review

My favorite and I feel the best material you can use are the practice test. With over 650 questions it's like taking 6 CCIE Written exams before the real exam. I have always used practice questions to help prepare for the test I take. The questions are great for finding out if you really know the material. The questions are divided into topics so that you can test on them all or just the ones you select. This is perfect if you are good in one area but need more review in others.

The Quick reference pdf consist of short potent chapters geared for quick reference. These chapters get right to the heart of the topics. This is great if you are just needing the facts without all the fluff.

I passed my Written on first attempt using this exam. I have years of experience and a few test under my belt. So I can say that this is a very good for preparing the written. I would highly recommend it to anyone needing to review and prepare for Written.

5Great Way to Review the MaterialFeb 02, 2005

If flash cards are your best way of learning something, here's clearly what you've been looking for. Of course you also have to be interested in the Cisco routing/switching philosophy. Specifically this set of 500+ flash cards is oriented around exam 350-001.

This book is made up of flash cards, yes, the kind you used to make in high school. If, of course, you are more computer minded, you might want to use the CD ROM instead. It has all of the flash cards along with the ability to shuffle the cards and to take a practice examination on your own PC. This is not a common form of book, but like I said earlier, if flash cards are your thing, this is the book for you.
