Description:

Facilitating high data transfers over long distances at a reasonable cost, Carrier Ethernet is solidifying its fundamental position as the core of next-generation networks. Since it first dazzled the IT world 40 years ago with its ability to move data over local networks, Ethernet has dramatically evolved in both form and function. And now, Carrier Ethernet, flexing its multi-gigabit muscle, is rapidly emerging as the undisputed technology of choice.

As engaging as it is comprehensive, this volume—

  • Examines the differences between the so-called flavors of Ethernet
  • Provides refreshers on virtual LANs (VLANs), virtual private networks (VPNs), and Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS)
  • Details Carrier advantages over other modalities with regard to network performance
  • Delves into Service Level Agreements, including ways to obtain a quality of service for the movement of voice and real-time video, as well as the creation of VLANs to facilitate the movement of data
  • Describes various services that can be enabled over an Ethernet infrastructure
  • All You Need to Know about this Carrier-Class System

Ensuring seamless migration to Carrier Ethernet from existing technologies, as well as integration with emerging services, this text provides readers with the expert guidance needed to make full use of Ethernet technology, both now and into the future.

    2Too much "intro" material for a $80 bookApr 28, 2008
    By CP-Mike
I pre-ordered this book with excitement. That excitement faded fairly quickly once the I realized just how much "refresher" there was on things as simple as NICs, Ethernet HUBS (yes I said hubs).. My opinion is that if a reader is looking for knowledge as complex and deep as carrier grade Ethernet services, they should already have the basics of Ethernet. It might have made sense to dedicate a page or two to refer the reader to other Ethernet basic training materials before continuing to read this book.

It is not until Chapter 6 (pg 157 of 195 content pages) that we get to "Carrier Ethernet Services", leaving a scant 38 pages (at best) to get into the meat and potatoes of the entire purpose of the book.

The reader will certainly get a good dose of the acronyms that make up the topic, but will lack the understanding needed to develop a solution which scales and makes a profit.

If this book was paperback and priced around $35, I would consider it a good primer on the topic. A hardback at $80 is in the realm of "textbooks", and I do not feel this book is of that depth.

I work for a vendor in this industry and am onsite every day with a large MSO. I made this purchase hoping to have something to share with my clients, but so far my clients have found it equally thin on useful information.

This book is a total rip-off. I thought Artech published advanced technical books. This book is a joke when it comes to relating the title to the content. It is is devote of anything related to carrier Ethernet. It is like a primer for Ethernet. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS TERRIBLE BOOK!!
As someone who has worked designing Ethernet equipment I found the information in this book very weak. Chapters about the history of Ethernet and Ethernet frame formats aren't worth spending $80 on. This author should be ashamed to have book his name on this lousy book.

1Missing the content implied in the TitleSep 14, 2010
    By David Rottmayer
I must say I was deeply disappointed with this book. The book should be named Refresher for Ethernet, as it has only 17 pages of information about Carrier Ethernet and even that is very WEAK. It is obvious to me that the author jumped on the bandwagon of Carrier (Metro) Ethernet without knowing anything about Carrier grade Ethernet, so he put a lot of information in the book about Ethernet, but missing the implied meaning of the title.

I would not recommend anyone waste their money on this book.
