Description:

From the author of the highly regarded training manuals Secrets of Surveillance and Surveillance Countermeasures comes the next course in identifying and evading hostile surveillance in the real world.

Every day in all parts of the world, hostile surveillance forces are stalking and exploiting unwitting prey -- be they private citizens, corporate employees or national security agents. This book demonstrates how the intended prey can detect, evade and, if necessary, turn the tables and assume the role of the predator to neutralize this threat.

This is not a book on evading garden-variety physical surveillance. Instead, this important manual provides the security professional with the tools he needs to operate at a master's level in the field of surveillance countermeasures. In step-by-step detail, it explains concepts, techniques and procedures that have been proven effective against the spectrum of surveillance capabilities ranging from the very basic to the world's most sophisticated.

Security professionals who want to be on top of their game, as well as private citizens seeking to protect themselves and their families, need the street-tested information in this book.

5Mastering the Art and Science of Surveillance Detection and AntisurveillanceJun 18, 2008
By ni4ni
I would never have thought of doing a book review, but when I saw a very critical review of this publication, I thought it was necessary, as I know the author and his very stellar credentials as an expert in the field. First, I agree that the first two ACM IV publications are very valuable resources, particularly for security professionals. However, the review appears to miss the point, as stated up front in "Countering Hostile Surveillance", which is that this book builds on the basic techniques detailed in publications on the subject such as the ACM IV publication "Surveillance Countermeasures", and provides an enhanced level of perspective to individuals who endeavor to elevate their security expertise to a higher (Master's) level. This book's scope is intentionally narrowed to specifically address the "art" and "science" of surveillance countermeasures theory, and therefore excludes specific tactical examples that might constrain a broader understanding, while enabling readers to apply the theory to their preferred operational methods. Certainly, the book "Surveillance Countermeasures", or some other source of training on physical surveillance detection and antisurveillance techniques, should be strongly considered as a prerequisite to maximize the utility of this publication.

The issue of technical tracking capabilities that are known to be employed by many surveillance efforts to provide stand-off is not within the scope of this publication. However, these capabilities are implied in the concept of "target pattern analysis", which is discussed in detail as a means to exploit a surveillance effort when it invariably must push in and place eyes on the target.

I agree that this is not a standalone text as it assumes a level of expertise on the subject that is intended to be expounded upon. And while the editorial review may not make this as clear as it could be, this point is made very clearly in the book's introduction. The excerpt from the introduction that best captures the over-riding intent of the book is perhaps the following:
"In fact, there is an infinite number of possible surveillance detection and antisurveillance maneuvers, but it is the underlying conceptual basis that makes them effective. The mere application of such techniques is amateurish by design if not planned and executed within the context of how surveillance countermeasures theory applies to surveillance practices."

And finally, the assertion that this book and "Surveillance Countermeasures" could be combined to make a comprehensive resource on the full range of the subject is a most valid one. However, understanding that a primary book pricing criteria is the number of pages, this would probably not be deemed appropriate by the many thousands of readers who have invested in the classic, "Surveillance Countermeasures".

I see that since submitting this review the negative review has been withdrawn, so I assume I made my point.

4Excellent Basic Teaching ToolSep 20, 2011
By Henderson Cooper
This book, along with the two other companion books on the subject combine into an excellent teaching tool on the subject of Surveillance. As a practical matter, the academic process is boring and often hard to place in prospective, the points and procedures in this book enhance what can be learned when combined with field exercises. This is an excellent companion to what an interested student would get from instruction from Escape The Wolf (book, elearning and practical training course) and Tactical Operations Support Services (practical training course).

5The ACM series of books are true 5 star booksJul 08, 2010
By R. Friederich
I have been either a law enforcement or security professional for over 30-years. I have personally conducted surveillance on numerous occasions, so I am familiar with surveillance concepts and principles.

You simply cannot get better material on the overall subject of surveillance than the three ACM IV books. Especially for the price. You could easily pay 5 times the sales price for one of these books, and wind up with something that is not much better.

Every professional should have these in his/her library.

2Not for the Average readerDec 15, 2011
By Thomas Curry "Caepio"
I think that this book is intended for established groups engaged in personal protection and so on, not the average guy like me worried about being abducted by aliens or being caught up in some exciting international plot to conquer Earth. Much of the information is common sense (at least to me), and the rest is information for how to manage teams of agents in the field. Also, please note that this isn't about countering technical surveillance. If you want to lose that stalker or see if someone has bugged your house, this isn't the right book. It needs to have a more accurate and descriptive, well description.
