Description:

When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters have created their own peaceful and secret society within an exclusive luxury apartment building called Fabletown. But when Snow White's party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it is up to Fabletown's sheriff, a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf, to determine if the killer is Bluebeard, Rose's ex-lover and notorious wife killer, or Jack, her current live-in boyfriend and former beanstalk-climber.

5Snart fairy tale about fary tales, not for little onesJul 08, 2010
Well written story of Fairy tales called fables residing in New York city. I was unaware of the Fables graphic novel line until I happen upon the book Peter and Max, one of the best works I have read in many years, and decided to see what the Vertigo comic was all about. There has been a lot of praise already posted on this site for the work, but for those a little tepid about a fairy tale, well - this is not your "scare the kids straight" king of fairy tale. Very adult material, but not overly so, that you should have no fear of investing your time into. Warning: If you read one, you'll want them all.

3What if Fables truly lived among us?May 21, 2010
This is your old school Vertigo all over again: Competent, but rarely astounding art, good, but too literary writing (that is, it reads more like a book than a comic and it's quite pompous), so in a way nothing new.
I must say I do not understand the hype at all, there are nice bits and Willingham is as witty and clever as usual, but it still doesn't suit me entirely.
The re-inventing of fable charcters as our contemporaries, their being among us since the mysterious and evil Adversary hunted them away fom their lands, is all surely interesting and I do have an itc to see where this goes. The Wolf (the sheriff of Fabletown, the New York dwelling and community of the Fables), Snow White as the community's Prime Minister, it is all endearing but still...
Maybe the next books will win me over, but, like harry Potter, this is probably not quite my thing.

5One Of My FavoritesMay 02, 2010
I picked up this TPB because James Jean does the covers, and was delighted when the story proved to be just as intriguing as the artwork. Fables has quickly become one of my top favorite comics and I've gotten two of my friends to read it as well.

The story constantly progresses and does so in such and intriguing way that I would buy the volumes three at a time and finish them the same day. I would recommend this story to anyone, especially those who enjoy fairy tales with a twist.

3A little more GrimmApr 06, 2010
Was really interested when I came across this series. I liked the idea of the fairy tale characters living in modern times. Once I started reading I read it the whole way through which didn't take long cause it clocks in around 120 pages. I liked that it had a way more Grimm Brother's than Disney take on the characters. Snow(Snow White)is basically the vice pres(she handles everything and does the dirty work)of Fabletown where all the tales live. She learns that her sister Rose Red may have been the victim of a violent crime. Rose's boyfriend Jack(Jack+the beanstalk) comes to Mister Wolf(yes the wolf of three little pigs) who is the "sheriff" of Fabletown. Thus begins the journey to find Rose or what's left of her and figure out just what happend in the first place. The characters have taken a complete 180 from the characters you remember but it makes them realistic and human. Snow White and Prince Charming did not live Happily Ever After and the Wolf is being guilt tripped by one of the pigs. Gave it only three stars cause i was expecting a little more out of it although it was good. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series and hope that it only gets better from here.

4I'm not a typical graphic novel fan, but any fantasy lover will be sucked into this seriesMar 25, 2010
Plot Summary: Here on Earth there is an enclave of refuges from hundreds of kingdoms called Fabletown. They've been chased from their homelands by an evil empire, and they live incognito on our mundane little planet. Snow White is divorced from Prince Charming, and serves as the overworked defacto head of Fabletown's government. The Big Bad Wolf has reformed from his granny-eating days, and he is the chief law enforcer, and the story opens with the Wolf's investigation into the apparent murder of Snow White's sister, Rose Red.

I was persuaded to try Bill Willingham's graphic novel series called Fables after I listened to his full-length book, Peter & Max: A Fables Novel. I've always enjoyed looking at graphic novels, but I've never felt compelled to read one before now. This mix of a contemporary setting and old-fashioned fable-lore has me hooked. I'll be reading them all.

I feel the need to clarify that this is truly for adults in every way. I thought maybe this was for the young adult crowd, but no, it deserves an R-rating for violence, language, and sexuality. Yippee! I just have to make sure that I hide it so my kids don't mistakenly pick this up, because the artwork is colorful and gorgeous. It drew me in and made me pause throughout the story, but the naughty bits are for adult eyes only.

This is a fun way to pass an hour or two, and even though the price per copy seems a little steep to my cheapo nature, I have to admit that I'd be more than willing to reread these on some cold, boring evening. The reviews also hint that these books just get better and better, so I can't wait to try Fables Vol. 2: Animal Farm.
