Good reference bookFeb 24, 2012
By rpv This rich collection of networking papers is organized into various categories, including mobile networking, ad hoc networking, advanced networking, quality of service, network and transport protocols, security, applications, and peer-to-peer networking. The papers are a subset of those presented at the 2006 International Conference on Information Networking (ICOIN) 2006.
Most of the papers assume a knowledge of networking, and specifically the transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) networking layers. Knowledge of queueing theory and simulation techniques is encouraged. Most of the papers assume a model, present a mathematical analysis and simulation results, and explain how it fits in a real network. There are a few papers on mobile IP version 6 (IPv6), multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) based networks, and optical networks. Most of the papers are implementation independent, and involve general concepts. While most of the papers are on new-generation networking, there are research ideas involving standardized areas such as border gateway protocol (BGP) routing and Internet routing schemes. Since voice over IP (VoIP) is quickly becoming commonplace, there are papers researching traffic characterization on such networks that can be immediately used in industry.
A browse through the papers here will give the reader an idea of the state of the art in networking research, and provide a starting point for researchers interested in pursuing ideas further. The work would serve as an excellent reference guide for doctoral candidates wishing to pursue research in these areas. The volume could form the seed for further research, and also for the adoption of its ideas into working products. All of the categories of papers presented are already being addressed in industry, at various levels. Though it will take a few years for industry to realize the output of this research, hopefully a few of the ideas here will make their way into working products.
