Great Book!May 24, 2010 Recently got this book and read it cover-to-cover. Given I'm new to SharePoint Administration (the developer / architect at heart :) ) ... can honestly say it seems to have valuable information on almost every page.
While a few chapters took a bit of a deeper dive into the details than some others, I feel the authors did a great job of trying to provide plenty of info along the way to help you plan, prepare, install, and configure your installation. They also point out areas to be aware of in the "real world" as far as best practices etc. goes. I easily can see this book staying on the desk serving as a great reference book as needed.
Look forward to their SharePoint 2010 book in June 2010 as well.
Great job.
Hit the Nail PerfectlySep 29, 2009 I was looking for a high-level Admin book to help maintain our growing SharePoint environment and this book hit that requirement to a 'T'. From planning the architecture to configuration to DR, this book hits every important area a MOSS Admin needs to contend with and does so in a fashion that makes it easy to get results expected. And I appreciate the authors not towing the line of Microsoft worship and instead where necessary, point out better options than what Microsoft espouses. That lends credibility for me and I better trusted what was being said. Every single chapter has nuggets of information that will make you a better admin. If you get one book for SharePoint administration, this would be one I would recommend.

Definitely put this one on your shelfMay 13, 2009 I've read a great many IT related books on more than several subjects.
Simply as an IT book, this one is right up there at the top. From the
clarity, depth, and style; the authors have made it easy to follow, and more importantly even easier to process the valuable information that they are trying to present.
That's the review on simply the IT value of the book. As it relates to Sharepoint, again easily the best Administrator book I've read. Not that others were inferior, most simply listed, demoed, the basics of Sharepoint Administration. This books goes a lot further and really brings out more of the "insides" of Sharepoint. The chapters on
STSADM and Search alone are worth the price. Anyone moving to Sharepoint, becoming more involved in Sharepoint, or wants to start expanding on their Sharepoint experience really needs to have this book on their desk and in their laptop bag.
And one other example of how much I recommend this book. I recently attended a Sharepoint Saturday (DC) event, where I won the book. So I was lucky enough to get it for free. As much as I like it, I'm almost tempted to go out and actually buy a copy. I won't of course.
While I'm very enthusiastic about the book, I'm not stupid. :)) Plus I just got back to work after an extended period of unemployment.
But thanks to Steve, Todd, and Shane. What an excellent addition to any IT bookshelf, and great contribution to the Sharepoint community.

Stands out from other admin booksApr 21, 2009 There are several other books on the subject of SharePoint administration and this one really stands out. This book does a great job of explaining the decisions that need to get made related to architecture and then walks users through the installation and configuration of the SharePoint farm. Not only does the book explain how to do it, but also gives good advice on why to do it.
This book is a more recent title than most of the other admin books and includes a number of timely subjects such as Windows 2008 Server and SQL Server 2008, and Powershell.
I've found this book to be very helpful on more than one occasion. It wasn't the first to market, but that is a good thing. The practical wisdom throughout this book is great. Highly recommended as a part of anyone's SharePoint library.
A must have SharePoint resourceFeb 26, 2009 I find this book to be an excellent resource. I have a stack of SharePoint books on my shelf but this is the one I keep on my desk. It is great to find a book that gets to the point comprehensively and directly without all kinds of fluff and sales speak. It is also based on real world experience which is what makes it so valuable. It is a must have for any SharePoint person.
