1Earlier book not the sameMay 07, 2009
By Jim. Daneke
I find the reports from the earlier posters to be based on the test that existed before April 1, 2009. The current version of this book is said to be based on this newer test.

I found the book to be severely substandard in preparing for this new test. As the previous poster said, the sample questions are not even in the same league with the questions on the test.

I rate this book as a complete waste of money if you are planning on taking the LPIC-1 tests.

This is a fantastic book to prepare before taking LPIC-1. Clear, consistent language with good examples covers all objectives. Really fast and good reference to the subject. I honestly can recommend this book to everybody who thinks about taking LPIC-1.
Good job Mr. Roderick W. Smith ;)
Thank you.

4Juicy Content RichOct 27, 2010

I thought this book would be a quick read, LOL my mistake! I'm happy about it though, it covers TONS of stuff. I've only been using a Linux OS for a few months, my primary use is on web servers (SSH). So I figured I better start getting smart and study this over the course of a year, possibly a bit more, and perhaps I'll be able to pass an exam eventually :P Lot of stuff, Lot of stuff, good purchase.

My only complaint is that the page paper pages feel cheap, kind of absorable and easy to tear, almost newspaper-ish, and a dull grayish color. So highlighting things will be scary, it might go through a few pages, I hope not!

4Good Reference GuideDec 29, 2011

Very good book for helping with the exam and learning Linux. The only complaint I have is minor in that the practice exams (both end of chapter and on the accompanying CD) are all multiple choice. The actual exams are peppered with questions which you WILL need to know the command, the command's structure, and necessary arguments to answer the question and ultimately type in the full command! The book does indeed go over the important arguments, but if you are actually going to be using Linux professionally AND pass the exam, it helps to have them memorized.

5Very thorough, good study guideAug 05, 2011

While this book is very thorough, it is no replacement for experience. The LPI exams are not something you can study for for a week and expect to pass. This book gives you the skeleton, but if you haven't used the commands mentioned in it a lot and don't have a good understanding of Linux in the first place, then this book will be of marginal use. If you have some experience under your belt and need a refresher or to fill in a few gaps, this book is excellent. It covers everything from the exams. The sample exams also made me aware of a few gaps I was unaware of, which allowed me to fix them. The difficulty of the actual exams was still much higher than the practice exams, so don't get complacent if you do well on the samples.
Due to the quality of this book, I will be purchasing their LPIC-2 book.
