An excellent introduction and useful reference.Jun 06, 2001
By Andrew Hartung Each chapter covers a new topic while building upon previous material. Lab exercises that really drive home the material are at the end of each chapter. Very hands-on learning. Topics include query, DDS file creation, programming calling, display files, CL programming, basic operation with commands, command prompting, the all important library list, and much more. After taking a intro AS/400 class with this book I was well on the way to being an advanced user. I even knew more then some longtime operators. I've seen and bought other AS/400 books, but I still keep coming back to this one, and have never seen a better intro book.

Very good bookMay 06, 1999
As an Oracle DBa, I found that this book got me going very quick on AS/400 and DB2. Cover lots of things (e.g. systems behavior, AS/400 commands) in just enough details. It's just a bummer that the book has only 12 chapters. I want more. Had the author added some more chapters, it could be used by both beginners and advanced users.

Best I`ve seenDec 06, 2003
As a student, I found this book very helpfull. Although this is a dry subject, this book allows the student to learn with a hands on approach (hence the title). I recommend this to anyone interested in this field.

It's definitely a good book on AS/400. It contains exercises in the book that helps learning further and it has the answers to the exercises as well. I recommend it. I'm new to AS/400 and I find it to be very helpful.
