The title is very accurateDec 09, 2008
By M&M If you are new to Microsoft SQL Server and relational databases or have been away from the technology for a while, this book will be very helpful. The author takes time upfront to start you off with the basics of SQL and work his way through most of the functionality in the current version of SQL Server. The examples are simple to understand. I do wish there had been more info on the Spatial Data Types, but that is probably because I am not a beginner on that subject and wanted to dive into more GIS analysis than this book was ready to provide.

This is a 5 star SQL book...., for Beginner's but is still in depth!!! Very good!!!Feb 10, 2011

I do not understand some people, when they complain or do not rate the book high, stipulating that it is for beginners. DUH!!! That is exactly what the book is for..., beginners! The book stipulates..., a beginner's guide..., so that is what is should be and it is. I am a recent computer graduate and the best thing about the book is it gives you a great overall foundation to build upon. I had a database class in college and this book covers much, much more. It is not easy, and not too hard. Best thing about it..., it has no mistakes or errors. There are other books that have many errors and errors are the worst and can hang you up or confuse you for hours. So being error free gives it an automatic 5 stars and being true to the title also gives it 5 stars.
So for a beginner book..., it is a 5 star book, and trust me..., it is not easy as pie. It is in depth for an overall great foundation.

An excellent introduction to a very complex topicDec 14, 2011
By Fritz I currently am neither a practicing IT admin/programmer/analyst nor someone with an education in computer science. Like many, I am self-taught, preferring the world of Linux to that of Microsoft, however due to the economy and job market I have been forced to make occupational changes. It was suggested that I investigate MSSQL Server 2008 and Windows 7 for eventual certification. I looked for a text on MSSQL Server 2008 and found Petkovic's book (after a somewhat lengthy book review process). This one simply stood out. Where others have commented that it is almost "too beginner", that's what I needed, not some heavy, tech-focused doorstop that is geared above my level of understanding. I find Petkovic's text to be very clearly written and easy for the beginner to understand, examples that make sense, with many technical drawings and screen shots pertinent to their respective chapters. From a beginners point of view, I could give Petkovic's text nothing less than a 10 (unless it came with his lectures on a DVD! - then I'd turn it up to "11"!). Thanks, Dusan!

Well done and usefulAug 01, 2008
By Kent L. Tegels Got this book the other night and read the bits and pieces of it I was most interested in. Good introduction but with some depth to it too. I like the idea of the excercises. No coverage of Service Broker than I could find and the coverage of spatial could have been better, but I would give a strong positive recommendation about this title.

Excellent Work!Dec 13, 2008

Mr Petkovic approaches his writing like a skilled and gifted artisan who is confident and has a complete understanding of a very complex subject (SQL Server). Our IT group has used his books in preference to those from Microsoft Press and others for several versions. His chapter layout and content is concise and clear, which is helpful when you need a "Quick Win" on syntax of some related operational question. As always we rate his work with five stars.
