3Not enough details despite large sizeJan 24, 2010
By S. Tamrakar "ST"
The book does not have enough details. It is ok if you just want to get introduced to features, otherwise I doubt if it will help people pass the exam. For most part it skims over topics without real information.

3Oracle11g OCA & OCPSep 07, 2010

It does not have enough detail to pass the OCA or OCP by itself. You will need better testing software to do that. It does make a good building block and reference to get your certifications.

4Great prep materialNov 21, 2009

It's a good book for preparing for the OCP exams...It builds gradually as new material is introduced. With detailed and clearly presented material it's easy to get familiar with Oracle products and also pass the exams on which the book is based.

3True - has lots of errors but still a useful referenceFeb 26, 2011

Its sad that for the 11g OCP DBA Upgrade Exam prep - this book stands alone. Unfortunately, its not because of greatness but rather - it just stands alone because there are no other 'books' on this exam available. Sybex did a brilliant job for their 10g OCP DBA upgrade but they have not published anything for this exam.

That said - I did use this book to prepare for my exam together with Kaplan Self Test Software preparation reading material and did Ace the test...which incidentally for those who have ever done these exams will know it is never easy !

The good thing is that - while there are typically errors - there does exist an errata for most of these and while it is truly annoying you can work through it. What I found most annoying was that some of the the books own questions have the wrong answer ! And when you're learning new things - the only thing worse than no documentation is incorrect documentation - particularly on a quiz that is intended to test your understanding - and your answer is correct - you double check that with independent references and find that the books answer is wrong !

Again - since it's the only reference out there - it is still a valuable time saver and can be very useful to get you through this exam.

On the topic of New features for DBAs for 11g there are other books available one in particular also from Apress by the same author Sam R. Alapati and Charles Kim that is a lot better edited and also rather useful for preparation for this exam...should you have the time to read both - that is ideal (recommended) but again time consuming.

What this book does achieve is the ability to focus on the salient material that is covered by the exam and when pared together, especially with Kaplan Self Test which also has it's own material on this exam along with their self test questions. The combination of all these is a winning recipe. Using this book alone is not enough.

Good luck.

3Decent, but not thorough enoughAug 08, 2011

Gone through most of the book, seems like it's just enough to pass the exams but not good enough to do much more. No real details that I could find, so you'll have to do other research in order to fully understand all the topics. I would recommend using this as a study aide only, mainly to help clarify points and give a differing perspective on issues.

As far as the CD. Lets just say you're better off not installing the test program. Some of the answers for the questions are incorrect, and could very easily lead to a misunderstanding if you're not all that familiar with the topics (Which you might not be if you've just read this book). You also might note, as the book is not detailed, any correct answers from the questions are even less detailed. Just enough information that you can look it up in the book, or better yet, allow you to do some research on your own say via google.

Over all it's worth the purchase if your looking for an extra study aide. I would NOT recommend this book if this is the only book your going to study from, it will get you their, but just barely..

Edit: After a few bit more looking, I really can ONLY recommend this book as a secondary study aide. Anything else and you will probably fail the actual exam.
