However, among many administrators and engineers, there is a lot of anxiety about learning how to script due to a lack of understanding about scripting technologies and how to use them. Practical Windows Administration Scripting alleviates this fear by putting the technologies into perspective and creating practical systems administration and automation examples. The book concentrates on scripting for windows administration and engineering tasks using Microsoft Scripting technologies. Starting with an introduction and primer on the various Windows Scripting technologies (windows Script Host, Windows Script Component, HTML application (HTA), WMI, ADSI, and VBScript), the book explains exactly what an administrator needs to know about scripting and which technology is right for which situation. From there the book moves on to discuss scripts, what types of scripts can be used to make Windows administration easier, and how to use the information from the first part of the book to build scripts customized to your particular needs. The book is written for experienced Windows systems administrators, engineers, and helpdesk technicians interested in using Windows Script technologies to automate and manage a Windows environment. If you are a Windows systems administrator or engineer who is well versed with Windows Administration tasks (such as managing services, disks, registry, etc.) and have basic Windows scripting or programming knowledge, this book is for you. | | | Product Details: | | | Author:

If you're scripting newbie looking for a good introduction into scripting inorder to help you with your network environment: this is not the book. There are others out there that are way better. Even for an intermediate scipter, the book still misses the boat. The author made poor assumptions about his audience, as well as the organization of key points are fairly messy.Practical Windows Administration Scripting (Networking & Security Series)
I wouldn't buy it again.Feb 15, 2008
By James B. Bendtsen I had previously purchased the book "Advanced VBScript for Microsoft Windows Administrators" by Don Jones and Jeffery Hicks. If you have the Microsoft book, you sure don't need this one by Bobby Malik. Buy the Jones/Hicks book, you'll have the best one on the market.

For Experienced Windows System AdministratorsJun 12, 2006

Scripts are used in Windows to automate administrative tasks. A simple script can often be used to make a single click that an unskilled user can use rather than having to use a series of separate clicks each requiring a decision.
This book was written for experienced Windows Systems adminstrators, engineers, and help-desk technicians needing to automate their windows environment. The book does not cover the Systems Management Server, SQL Server or the Exchange Server, but the techniques are the same and the techniques described here can well be used with the different scripts used with those software packages.
The book is supplied with a CD that contains several scripts. There is a cautionary note saying that these scripts should be well tested by you before installing on operational (as opposed to test) systems. The CD also includes Script Store tool that is useful to securely save and retrieve scripts.
