A Complete Waste Of TimeMar 11, 2008
By M. Miles

This was a complete waste of $50. I am a Crystal Reports designer, and wanted a resource that would bring me up to speed with the expression language. This book is 300 pages of screen shots with no examples of input! I don't need to know how to navigate the UI (I learned that in much less time than reading the book would require.) Instead, the critical information - writing conditional expressions, building parameters, creating running total fields - was omitted.
If you have any comfort level with report writing, save your money or buy a reference guide to Java or Groovy.

Outdated - Buy iReport Ultimate Guide insteadJul 26, 2010
By NerdsRUs This guide is outdated and the author now works on iReport Ultimate Guide (which is a part of the Ultimate Guide series by JasperSoft). I am not sure why anyone would pay $40 for this outdated book, when you can get the utlimate guide for $50!
If you can get this book for under $20, I'd say buy it. This guide is good for beginners (not the best of guides, but with a little bit of effort and mucking around with the software, you can figure things out). Also, a lot of the things described in this book still applies to the new version of iReport - just takes a lot of prodding to figure out where the menu items are etc.

Good user manual, not a cookbookOct 20, 2008
By P. Cherryl This book is a user manual for iReport, a sophisticated open source report design tool. I bought the book because online help is non-existant and book purchases provide income for the software developer. Advanced topics covered include chart and crosstabs, subreports, and creating and using templates, but there is very little on scripting with Groovy. I did find the book useful as an introduction to JasperReports and iReport, which is what I was looking for, otherwise if you are looking for a cookbook with advanced report examples, this book is not it.
Excellent ServiceMay 18, 2011
By pgreenspan I was going on vacation and would have liked to have this book to read - I know, sick! - but I had ordered it way too close to when I was leaving. To my delight, I received it a couple of days before I left so I was able to bring it with me. Thanks for the great service!
New To iReportMay 28, 2009

This guide is good for a beginner to iReport. It covers the basics. I have had some trouble trying to accomplish report tasks that this manual did not cover, or covered only the mere basics. I wouldn't recommend this guide to anyone who needs to design super fancy, intricate reports.
