4Interesting historical perspectives on the World Wide Web and Mass Comm - excellent foundations readingJul 08, 2009
By txnguyen
I first read this text as required reading in an communications web technology class I took last year, and found the overall content and correlations to be valuable, especially for a non-technical communications student and having no real understanding of the internet (other than general use) beforehand. I think this book does a great job of introducing students to the very technical world of internet communication technologies, even though much of the examples cited are getting a bit old (like some of the stats and such). But the book is really good about explaining the relationship of the internet to mass communications and the importance of social and legal issues. For what it's worth, i found it valuable and would recommend it for those in the communications field. It would be nice if the authors would update it, though.

1Useless and completely out of dateApr 29, 2009

If you are an educator, and would like to continue calling yourself such, please do not make your students buy this book and waste their time.

The perspectives, documentation, and references are completely out of date with this text. The internet proceeds at such a fast pace, that much of this is left behind and out of sight.

For heaven's sake, the thing mentions Gopher and Netscape! By mentioning Netscape, I mean that many of the illustrations are in fact, from a Netscape Browser window.

Very very sad.

Very Very Useless.
